In W. B. Yeats’s Countess Cathleen Maeve – Irish name of Mab, the shakespearian fairy queen – is the queen of the “invisible host”. During the full‑moon nights after a ritual dance she cries for a mysterious love, lost and forgotten. The verses that describe this scene have inspired this piece

« ... A man, they say,

Loved Maeve the Queen of all the invisible host,

And died of his love nine centuries ago.

And now, when the moon’s riding at the full,

She leaves her dancers lonely ...

 ... And for three days

Stretches and sighs and wets her long pale cheeks ...

... Because she has forgot his name ... »
